Now that spring has arrived, it is time for homeowners to do a few home checks to keep everything running smoothly.

  • Examine the roof Has the winter caused damage to the shingles that can cause future water leaks?
  • Check your gutters Improper drainage can lead to water inside the home, in the basement, or in the attic. It is important to make sure the drain spouts are pointing away from the foundation
  • Check outside faucets Making sure these do not have freeze damage will prevent future issues. “Turn the water on and place your thumb or finger over the opening. If you can stop the flow of water, it is likely the pipe inside the home is damaged and will need to be replaced. While you're at it, check the garden hose for dry rot.” HGTV
  • Air conditioning Change the filter, check for leaks, and make sure the drainage pans are working effectively.
  • Smoke detectors Make sure there is one on each floor of your home. Test them monthly, and change the batteries annually or as needed.” Travelers Insurance
